What is LinkedIn? How Can It Help You Today?

February 21, 2012 By Miriam Philips

What Is LinkedIn?

Linkedin
LinkedIn is a social network site that was created for business professionals. This web site helps users network with other business professionals. Individuals should remember that the information that they post on this site is viewed by other members and should refrain from giving out personal information.

How to use LinkedIn

LinkedIn has its own YouTube channel full of how-to videos. There are lots of tips for organizing your business page. But to get started you will need to build both a personal page and a business page.

Of course, you want to make sure that your LinkedIn profile is 100% complete that your photo is professional and flattering (no serious scowls please) and don’t forget about the recommendations. Linkedin suggests in their training that the best way to get recommendations is to give them first to as many of your 1st degree connections as possible. People usually want to reciprocate – but they’re busy, and it can help to shape their recommendation by offering content suggestions. Give them a sample of another recommendation (even if you have to write it yourself) and then that will make it a bit easier for them.

When you are writing about yourself you need to find a balance between highlighting your best qualities and not over doing it. You don’t want to sound too good to be true or sound like your LinkedIn profile is a spammy ad. You can do updates, but don’t over do it.

Remember, LinkedIn is a networking site so you will need to put some effort into connecting with other professionals. Make sure you always include a personal not with each of your invitations. And if it is a new connection, be sure to make reference to your connection with them so it doesn’t seem like your communication is coming out of thin air.

Who do you link to with LinkedIn?

Start with the people you already know. Go through your contacts and review people who you have worked with in the past professionally. And don’t hesitate to seek connections with mentors, professors and people who have made an impact in your life even if their are not direct colleagues through LinkedIn. Also, be sure to make it worth their while to connect with you.

You can also expand your LinkedIn experience with LinkedIn Groups and LinkedIn Answers. These venues allow you to showcase your knowledge and talents. Take the time to find the groups that fit your target market and contribute in a positive manner to expand your sphere of influence and connections.According to LinkedIn, the best groups focused on a particular industry sector, specific professions, targeted special interests, or common problems.

The free LinkedIn membership offers some services such as maintaining a profile and running a limited amount of searches. However, people will have access to more features by paying for a membership. These features include such reference searching and directly contacting other members.
