Have you ever seen a Bull Mastiff?
The Bull Mastiff is a very large breed domestic canine. It has a stocky build and a short muzzle. The Bull Mastiff shares its heritage with the Molosser dogs, and were originally bred by 19th-century gamekeepers in England to guard estates from poachers.
The breed’s bloodlines are drawn from the English Mastiff and Old English Bulldog. Bull Mastiffs are bred to be 60% Mastiffs and 40% Bulldogs. It was recognized as a purebred dog by the English Kennel Club in 1924. And was later recognized in the United States.
Bull Mastiff have skulls that are massive and wrinkled. Males should be 25 to 27 inches tall (AKC Std.) at the withers and 110 to 130 pounds. Females should be 24 to 26 inches at the withers, and 100 to 120 pounds. Visualize the weight of a human. Breeding these dogs to exceed these dimensions is discouraged by breeders as large breed dogs have their host of typical maladies and improper breeding will often exacerbate some of the less healthy traits. They come in fawn (picture a tan color and as light as nearly blonde), red and brindle picture a dog that looks to have tiger stripes- brindle can be light or dark depending). According to AKC standards it is acceptable for them to have some white markings across the chest.
What is the temperament of a bull mastiff
Bull Mastiffs have good temperaments and are usually docile. They are a very quiet dogs and very rarely bark. If they are faced with a challenge they will become fierce (if someone is provoking them).
These canines can be a great addition to a home with children but the dogs will need some obedience training and to be socialized. Bull Mastiffs will protect their family if they feel that the members are being threatened by intruders.
How do you care for your bull mastiff
These dogs need to be taken on daily walks because if they do not get enough exercise they have behavioral issues. But remember that the flat nose and tendency for hip displasia means that this dog is unlikely to be your best running partner. They grow until they are nearly three years old so steep hiking, high jumping or hill climbing is a bad idea. Sadly, bull mastiffs are not long term dogs. They have a short life expectancy of under 10 years, but don’t let that stop you. This human sized dog is a cuddler and would be a great addition to your home.
